A place for Old Souls

I must humbly admit that I was honored to be labeled an Old Soul while still a teenager. A geek? Perhaps. A nerd? Perhaps that as well for I took as much pride in my well-worn dictionary as I did in my record collection. I enjoyed wearing cardigan sweaters (A throwback to the Leave it to Beaver television show) and I frequently used the word “indeed” in conversations. By the early 1980s, I found a spiritual and permanent home in the backward looking British Young Fogey movement although I fortunately never took to smoking a pipe or using the word “actually” in every sentence.

I take pride that being an Old Soul often means asking for loud music to be turned down in restaurants, finding other people’s cell phone ring-tones to be annoyingly obnoxious, wearing ear-plugs to movies, driving slowly in parking lots, appreciating such words as languid and lethargy, and seldom rising before ten in the morning. I have gladly adopted these habits and have diligently honed them to perfection over many years of practice.

Yet Old Neal is also dedicated to being curious, learning from others, having good chats that can be challenging, intellectual, lively, and even  contentious, but always civil. About what topics then? Well, just about anything! Find something between A and Z and we can have a good chin-wag about it.

In this spirit, I offer you my most humble thoughts on subjects ranging from the music of Jim Morrison/The Doors to the exasperating exhortations of self-help gurus. You will find discussions of Pink Floyd’s musical experiments at Pompeii, Italy to the annoying affectations and pretensions of military generals. Scroll down a bit and you will find reminisces about the beauty and benefits of the letter L as well as my thoughts on the significance of the movie The Godfather.

As you meander around the site, I hope you will find something that piques your interest and that you will accept my invitation to add your thoughts. Remember, it is perfectly OK to be an Old Soul even if you do not favor cardigan sweaters!
